Balconies and roof terraces are often bordered by a decorative railing. However, this usually offers hardly any privacy. To really feel comfortable on the balcony, you need some privacy. A suitable balcony privacy screen keeps prying eyes from neighbors and passersby away. Balcony cladding also serves as protection against wind, strong sun, and keeps out light rain. Depending on the structural conditions, but also on personal taste, there are various options for a suitable privacy screen on the balcony.

Sun sails and parasols

In addition to privacy, sun sails and parasols also provide shade. They are ideal for small balconies and densely populated residential areas. Especially on higher balconies, sun sails and parasols reliably shield annoying glances. Thanks to weatherproof sun sails with UV protection, painful sunburns are a thing of the past. However, sun sails and parasols only offer little lateral protection. For transparent balcony railings, however, privacy mats, decorative fabrics, or plants provide a remedy.

Awnings as a privacy element

Awnings are a popular privacy and sun protection on large balconies and terraces. There are fixed and free-standing models to choose from, as well as manually and electrically operated awnings. The privacy screen keeps wind and rain away. Like sun sails and parasols, however, awnings mainly provide privacy from above. Suitable elements made of wood, bamboo, awning fabric, or plastic provide lateral privacy. Balcony nets are also an optimal lateral privacy screen for balcony railings and also serve as child safety devices.

Privacy mats made of natural materials

Privacy screens made of wood or plant materials give every balcony a natural flair. Privacy mats made of reed or bamboo are durable and can be easily mounted on balcony railings. The natural privacy elements are also particularly decorative, sustainable, and have a sound-absorbing effect. Rattan looks extremely elegant. Natural rattan is therefore also popular for balcony furniture, but it is very expensive and requires appropriate care. The cheaper alternative is a balcony privacy screen made of polyrattan. The plastic mesh is stable, weather-resistant, and very easy to care for.

Nets and fabrics

Privacy nets and fabrics can usually be attached to the balcony railing very easily and without drilling. Only cable ties or wire are necessary for attachment. Privacy and shading nets provide generous shade and ensure sufficient privacy. They also serve as wind protection and keep small children from climbing on the balcony railing.

Plants

For a green and natural privacy screen on the balcony, plants with dense foliage and a growth height of at least one meter are suitable. Climbing plants such as wisteria, ivy, and hops are optimal. Grasses, stalks, and container plants such as vines, Chinese silver grass, and bamboo can also serve as balcony privacy screens.
