The accommodation is paid, the trip is booked and yet the holiday becomes more expensive than expected. Usually it's many small amounts: breakfast on the go, ice cream, parking fees, admissions, sunbeds, souvenirs and spontaneous purchases. A simple daily budget makes these incidental costs visible without every coffee turning into a math problem.
First separate fixed and variable costs
Accommodation, travel, tolls and already booked tickets don't count toward the daily pocket money. For a vacation day, four groups remain:
- Food and drinks:Groceries, restaurants, snacks and ice cream.
- Transport:Parking, bus, train, ferry or rental fee.
- Activities:Entry, guided tour or sports activity.
- Small items:Souvenirs, beach items and spontaneous purchases.
Spread the available money across the vacation days
First deduct a reserve for unforeseen expenses from the total travel fund. The remainder is divided by the number of vacation days. The result is not a strict limit for each individual day, but it shows whether an expensive excursion on one day should be balanced by a cheaper program on another.
Those who prefer cash can use four small envelopes or compartments. Digitally, a short note in the evening is enough. The important thing is simply not to lose sight of restaurant bills and spontaneous card payments.
Check incidental costs before excursions
- Is parking chargeable, and is there a cheaper way to get there?
- Are sunbeds, umbrellas or cloakrooms included in the admission?
- Can you bring your own snack?
- Are there family tickets, time slots or online prices?
- What are the cancellation and rebooking terms?
Include children in the budget
For older children, a set amount for ice cream, small games or souvenirs can be helpful. They then decide for themselves whether to spend it immediately or save for a larger purchase. That doesn't prevent every discussion, but it makes the limit understandable.
Deliberately plan low-cost days
A day at a free-access lake, a picnic, a playground or a walk through the resort costs little and creates room for a special outing. Refillable water bottles and snacks from your accommodation also cut daily expenses.
Five minutes in the evening are enough
Only note the major items and check how much of the weekly budget is left. This allows the family to react in time. Waiting until the last day of the trip to add up all the receipts doesn't change anything.
