Returning from vacation on Sunday evening tempts you either to unpack everything in a rush or to leave everything until Monday. Both often make the start of the week harder. A clearly limited 30-minute reset only takes care of what would be unpleasant overnight or urgent the next morning.
The rule: secure, prepare, stop
Set a timer and split the tasks. The goal isn't a perfectly finished home. Wet items are secured, food is stored, and the next morning is prepared. Everything else can wait until tomorrow.
Minute 0 to 10: Wet and delicate items
- Remove swimwear, towels and damp laundry from bags and suitcases.
- Put food, medications and refrigerated items in their proper place immediately.
- Place shoes on a suitable surface to air out.
- Dispose of or sort rubbish and empty bottles.
The suitcase itself doesn't need to be completely empty now. A detailed sequence is provided by Unpacking your suitcase after vacation.
Minute 10 to 20: Kitchen and breakfast
Quickly check bread, milk, fruit and a simple option for dinner or breakfast. Now is not the time for an elaborate grocery run. Frozen supplies, pasta, eggs, oats, or sandwiches can ease the transition.
Clear just one free workspace and set out water bottles for the morning. If someone needs something quick after the drive, they'll find an idea at protein-rich dinner in 15 minutes.
Minute 20 to 30: Ease the morning
- Put keys, wallet and needed documents in their usual place.
- Lay out clothes for the next day.
- Quickly check school, daycare, or work bags.
- Check the alarm and first appointments.
- Pre-sort a load of laundry for tomorrow, but only start it if it will still finish in time.
Tasks for children
Children can bring their water bottle to the kitchen, put dirty laundry in the basket, and set out a favorite item for the next morning. Small, clear tasks work better than "Unpack your suitcase".
What can consciously wait until Monday
- Sort souvenirs and photos
- Clean and store suitcases
- Do all loads of laundry
- Thoroughly vacuum the car
- Deal with mail and emails completely
Only items involving moisture, refrigeration, or fixed Monday appointments take priority. That way there's still time after the trip to shower, drink and settle in.
Make the next vacation easier before you leave
