Peonies are beautiful flowers and should not be missing from any flower bed. They come in a wide variety of colors and are very robust plants with a long lifespan. Here is a tip on how they can really thrive:
Planting and caring for peonies
Peonies thrive best in loamy, humus-rich soil. The location should be in full sun, and they also cope very well with drought. You should always leave them in the same spot, then they will become more beautiful from year to year. Most varieties available for purchase are hardy, so no special winter protection is necessary here.
Tree peonies do not need to be pruned back, although it is advisable to carry out a cleaning prune in late autumn (Nov-Dec). In this case, cut the shoots back to the first bud – i.e., only the plant parts, not the bud itself. As a preventative measure, also remove all the foliage.
For herbaceous peonies, cut the yellow and brown stems as close to the ground as possible in October/November.
Extra tip:When planting, keep in mind that peonies can grow into a bush as tall as a man.
