Pregnancy tips

In the video for the 37th week of pregnancy on meinhaushalt.at important information and tips for pregnancy in week 37 are presented.

In the 37th week of your Pregnancy pregnancy, your child is now 34 weeks old, weighs around 2700g and is about 44cm tall in total. The fetus's digestive system and intestines are still immature and will not be fully developed until the age of about 3 or 4 years. Your child has now achieved a magnificent fat layer of 15% of its body weight, which will keep it warm after birth. The skin is still quite pink because the veins run close under the skin. Since your baby has such a nice weight, small skin folds are now forming on the knees, wrists and neck, which are also often referred to as "baby fat". If it catches its thumb, it sucks on it with pleasure, drinks up to three liters of amniotic fluid per day and is now strong enough to grip firmly.

The birth

You are surely already very excited about what the birth will be like; after all, you are now at the end of your pregnancy, so such thoughts are becoming increasingly present. Many pregnant women have very firm ideas or fantasies about everything from the first contraction to the birth position. Of course, it is nice if a birth goes harmoniously and according to plan, but you should not orient yourself towards "ideal cases". This could well lead to high expectations and put you under pressure. Feel free to talk to your partner, your family or friends as well as your midwife about the birth process, including your fears and worries as well as your joys. This will make you feel more flexible regarding the course of the birth.

Nevertheless, there are clear basic points that make up a birth. During the Pregnancy you have certainly thought about one thing or another. First comes the opening phase, which usually lasts the longest. With the first child, this can often take up to 12 or 14 hours. The contractions begin, the cervix shortens until it has completely disappeared, the cervix opens, the amniotic sac bursts or has to be ruptured. Then follows the transition phase, which lasts on average between one and two hours. The cervix has opened to ten centimeters here, but the head still has to pass through and for this it must slip deeper into the pelvis. The contractions usually become a bit more intense and usually last 60 to 90 seconds. With the expulsion phase, the cervix is fully dilated, the child has reached the pelvic floor and the perineal tissue and labia are sufficiently stretched. The baby can now slide out quite easily.

Many mothers report that the expulsion phase is by far the most pleasant phase of the birth, as you can actively participate here. Before this point, you had to breathe through the contractions, try out different positions to relieve the contractions and wait for things to happen. With the expulsion, you can actively push, see the head – if it is already peeking out a little – and feel it with your fingers and know: now it won't take much longer.
Once your child has been born, the afterbirth phase follows, in which the umbilical cord – the connection between mother and child – is severed. In addition, after some time, the placenta detaches from the uterus and slips out. With this last act, the birth is over and you can now fully dedicate yourself to the baby and get to know each other.
