Good coffee enjoyment is important for a successful day

Perhaps you are like me and my girlfriend. The days begin with the often painful, always identical routine. The alarm clock rings far too early, tears you from your sleep, and confronts you with the harshness of the next workday. We master the days, and especially these mornings, only through relatively excessive coffee consumption. One of us regularly takes pity after some time, shuffles into the kitchen, and puts on the coffee that will get us both through the day.

Our coffee machine therefore usually runs for a very long time, on average two hours, to be able to provide us both with hot refills. We are both real heavy drinkers. On the weekend, it is even worse. We often stay in bed for several hours while our faithful machine waits in the kitchen. At some point, I started to get interested in the power consumption and was shocked. A coffee machine consumes 1000 watts per hour. In my head, the calculation started immediately. Two hours of runtime a day, perhaps over 300 days a year, resulted in the unpleasant realization that 600 kWh alone are eaten up by the coffee machine. Therefore, I went on the search for a not quite so cost-intensive variant.

I found what I was looking for in a very good coffee machine from Philips. The HD 7546/20 Gaia Thermo coffee machine. The machine appealed to me externally due to its simple elegance. The controls are kept in black, while the filter and pot were designed with a metallic look. The machine itself weighs 2.8 kg and is about 45 cm tall; it fits comfortably on any kitchen table. The price of at least almost 67 euros (as of 10/09) already at Amazon was a bit too high for me at first, but the product convinced me to make this larger investment. Because the special thermal carafe of the machine stores the heat of the drink for several hours. This means you can deactivate the machine after a brewing time of under 10 minutes for a maximum of 1.2 liters of coffee and still have a hot wake-up call hours later.

However, should you forget to deactivate the machine—this happened to us more often at the beginning due to the change—it switches itself off automatically after two hours. Since the power consumption is also 1000 watts per hour, we are by no means using more electricity with the new machine. Another useful feature is the drip stop. This interrupts the brewing process so that you can also drink a cup of coffee in a hurry.

I am therefore really satisfied with our purchase and give the machine top marks. Since we have had it, we are probably saving around 550 kWh per year. At a price of 20 cents per kilowatt hour, we are already saving 111 euros in the first year. Since the electricity price will likely continue to rise, this amount will consequently grow even more. I can therefore highly recommend the Philips Gaia: You get a visually appealing, easy-to-use machine with which you will save a lot of money (we will have recovered the price of the machine after just six months) and, finally, my purely subjective impression: The coffee also tastes better!
