Light alarm clock

What was your start to the day like when you were a few centimeters shorter than you are now? Did your little brother hop into your bed? Did your mother drum impatiently with sharp fingernails on the bedroom door decorated with posters? Were you able to enjoy the luxury of a clock radio that pulled you out of your dreams with groovy music?

What was getting up like in the past?

For me, it is above all the old rattle alarm clock that I still remember well. My cool friend gave it to me on the occasion of her grandfather's decluttering campaign. We were into really old things!

After a few weeks of brave perseverance, I secretly disposed of the masterpiece in the galvanized trash can behind the school. But I remember the adrenaline shock that shot through my veins every morning, and my racing heart at the shrill sound of the metallic monster, as if twenty-five years hadn't passed since then.

My height has changed by several centimeters in the meantime, and there is no longer any talk of such moments of shock at an early hour. For me, the luxury begins in the evening: depending on my spontaneous preference, I choose an alarm tone or a natural sound that I want to be woken up by, and I change the intensity of the light that will gently wake me up.

Being gently woken up by a light alarm clock

At 5:30, while I am still dreaming sweetly, the wake-up assistant of my light alarm clock (Amazon link) starts to work. The light source on my bedside table turns on at a low intensity, which increases gradually and very gently over half an hour. I have been told that the hormone balance of my sleeping body is oriented towards the increase in brightness: the brighter it gets, the more melatonin (this hormone controls the body's day-night rhythm) is broken down and serotonin (the "happiness hormone") is built up. Oversleeping with this wake-up support is a feat I no longer manage. The body is prepared for waking up so well that a relatively quiet alarm tone is enough to release me from Morpheus' arms.

I can confirm from my own experience: when the acoustic alarm clock turns on at six o'clock and accompanies me into the morning with a pleasant sound that slowly gets louder, I feel rested and fit for the day. And that every day.

A special highlight for me, however, is the Light alarm clock (Amazon link) in the cold season: In winter, there is a lack of light, which leads to us having relatively more melatonin and less serotonin in the body. And that makes us tired. Since I have been using the light alarm clock, getting up is much easier for me even in winter, and I feel powerful and fresh in the morning.

Of course, the light alarm clock has a clock, and with the integrated digital FM radio, I am well informed about world events early in the morning.

My conclusion: No shock at an early hour, no racing heart, no unwilling feeling when waking up. – The Light alarm clock (Amazon link) is pure wellness for me! I cannot imagine a better start to a beautiful and successful day.

  1. I have tried both a light alarm clock and sleep phase alarm clocks. My feeling is that light alarm clocks don't work for me. What do you think? I tested the Philips Wake-Up Lights.

  2. Light alarm clocks work quite well for me, but only when I'm not dead tired. I don't like sleep phase alarm clocks as much, because with some you have to wear something or you are woken up too early within a certain period of time. I want to be woken up gently or as late as possible. Tip for all iPhone owners: if you are not afraid of electromagnetic radiation, you can also download an iPhone application that measures whether you are moving and only wakes you up within a certain period of time if you are not sleeping so deeply. It doesn't work 100%, but for those who want to be innovative ? ….

  3. Hello, Has anyone read the test here yet? Here, the Philips is probably the best. Can anyone who already has experience with it confirm this?
Would be grateful for feedback, I am currently still wavering between the Lumie and Philips light alarm clock
