In the video for the 40th week of pregnancy on meinhaushalt.at important information and tips for pregnancy in week 40 are presented.
The 40th week of Pregnancy is reached – if your child has not been born yet, the countdown is slowly beginning. In this week, the fetus is 37 weeks old, weighs approx. 3,400g and is about 50cm tall. Your child is now ready for a life outside the womb. It has diligently gained fat pads, the vernix caseosa and lanugo have almost completely disappeared, and the lungs are also ready to take their first breaths. It won't be long now before you can hold your angel in your arms.
Final spurt of pregnancy
Some women despair at this stage of pregnancy. The belly is big and heavy, climbing stairs becomes increasingly arduous, and even the simplest work seems almost impossible. It often seems to pregnant women as if the Pregnancy would never end and the child would prefer to spend its time in the warm and cozy body forever. But don't worry: so far, every child has found its way out. It can only be a matter of days now. If the baby does not want to take the step into the world on its own, there are some aids that can certainly promote labor.
Some midwives recommend intercourse with your partner. The seminal fluid contains prostaglandins, which are certainly labor-inducing. So, for those who still feel like having sexual intercourse and both partners agree, this is a good alternative to lure the baby into the light.
Further tips are really only recommended by midwives or doctors in cases where the due date has passed. This includes, for example, nipple stimulation: the nipples are rubbed vigorously for one minute, then paused for two to three minutes until another minute of rubbing is performed. This can indeed cause contractions, which signal that the uterus is ready for birth.
A spice tea mixture of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and verbena tea can also stimulate labor activity. Discuss this recipe with your midwife: if you are already past your due date, she will certainly be happy to help you.
The baby is finally here
The time after birth is filled with happiness and stormy emotions for the expectant parents. After weeks of waiting and the seemingly eternal pregnancy, finally being able to hold your child in your arms seems unbelievable to many parents in the first moments – and yet these are the first minutes that weld parents and children together in a way. The first eye contact, for example, is an unforgettable moment, but getting to know each other also strengthens the bond.
Once the new earth citizen and the parents have become familiar with each other, the midwife comes into play again. The U1 – the first examination – is carried out while still in the delivery room. Here, the weight, height, head circumference, body functions, fingers and toes, as well as skull bones are checked. After this exhausting examination, your child will certainly be hungry – the baby will be placed on your breast for the first time in the delivery room, which is also one of the most beautiful moments for mother and child. This intimate contact, accompanied by tenderness, love, and trust, is considered a formative event.
If everything is in order, you will usually spend a few more days on the maternity ward until you and your child are allowed to make your way home as a family after the U2.
