Using up leftovers helps save money, because everyone who runs a household knows this problem: you either buy too much or cannot use up all the food that has been opened. And so it can happen time and again that in our world of abundance, vast amounts of food are simply thrown away. But it doesn't have to be that way: with simple household tips, you can use up various foods.

Using up leftovers in the household helps save money

Chips and pretzel sticks

Chips and pretzel sticks are delicious, but you rarely eat a whole bag at once. Once the bag is opened, salty snacks dry out quickly. These don't have to end up in the trash, but can alternatively be used as breadcrumbs. Simply put the leftovers in a freezer bag and crush them with a few movements or roll over the closed bag a few times with a rolling pin – and your spicy breadcrumbs are ready.

Mustard leftovers in the jar

Mustard leftovers in the jar accumulate quickly and scraping them out is tedious work, but there is a tip for this too. Simply add spices, a little oil, and vinegar to the mustard, close the jar, and shake vigorously – and you have a simple but culinary dressing for a mixed salad.

Mashed potatoes

It's easy to misjudge the amount of mashed potatoes – reusing the leftovers seems impossible, especially since cold mash doesn't taste good and reheating it isn't delicate either. Nevertheless, the leftovers don't have to be thrown in the trash, but can serve as a base for croquettes. Use two spoons to conjure up gnocchi from a little mash, briefly put them in oil, and then roll them in breadcrumbs. Optionally, you can also add vegetables to the mash according to your taste. Now deep-fry the homemade croquettes until golden brown and the treat is ready.

Roast leftovers

Plenty of roast leftovers left over from Sunday dinner? Cold roast tastes very good with a little mustard in a bread roll for supper. However, if there is still significantly more on the roast platter, you can skillfully use it as a ragout the next day. To do this, cut the meat into small pieces, sear it lightly in a pot, add some mushrooms and onions, and finally thicken with gravy thickener – done.

Apples

Apples are delicious and healthy – but if a few have been left lying around, they quickly get bruises and look unappetizing. However, you don't necessarily have to throw them on the compost. Why not conjure up a delicious compote for dessert? Cut out the unsightly parts, cut the good apple parts into pieces, and let them cook in a pot with a little water and sugar over medium heat until a nice mash forms: delicious!

Pasta

Have you cooked too much pasta again and a considerable amount is left over? You can make delicious fried noodles from it. Simply put the noodles in a pan with vegetables, a little beaten egg, and a little oil and fry them until crispy. Finally, add some Parmesan on top and the new dish is ready.

With all these tips, you not only save money but also work like a gourmet – have fun trying them out.
