If you are a DIY enthusiast who wants to drill a hole in the wall of your home, you should take these household tips to heart:

If you want to drill a hole in masonry, e.g. to hang a picture, it can happen that you hit the mortar and drill a larger hole than intended. To prevent this, you should first use a small drill bit. Once you are sure that no more mortar is crumbling, you can use the larger drill bit of the intended size.
If too much mortar does crumble away, you can secure the dowel in the hole by inserting a few matches into the gap.
Caution:The version with the matches is, of course, less load-bearing.
