Babies can also get sick. Specifically, there are diseases that arise when one has to wear a diaper:
What is a diaper fungal infection?
A diaper fungal infection is a condition that affects babies and toddlers in particular, but also older people. So it can affect anyone who has to wear a diaper. Strictly speaking, it is a fungal infection.
How does a diaper fungal infection occur?
Skin fungus loves warm and moist areas of the body; it can really grow and spread well on them. If you do not keep the intimate area meticulously clean and dry, it is only a matter of time before a skin fungus forms. People with a weakened immune system, e.g., during a flu-like infection, are usually affected faster than healthy people.
How is a diaper fungal infection treated and how can it be prevented?
The treatment is relatively simple. You get an ointment for fungal infections prescribed by the doctor and use it according to the package insert or as recommended by the doctor. Prevention is somewhat difficult but doable. The diaper area should be dry, which means the wet diaper should not stay on the skin for too long; it should therefore be changed relatively frequently.
For babies and toddlers, it is best to do it after every meal; for older people, you have to time it so that it is changed after they have emptied their bowels/bladder. The intimate area should always be cleaned when changing the diaper. While there are those great wet wipes, they often irritate the skin. A damp washcloth without added soap is ideal, then dry the area. If the intimate area is not dried, you have moist skin again, so you could save yourself the diaper change. Afterwards, the area is thickly creamed with the antifungal ointment and the fresh diaper is put back on.
Extra tip:Especially in summer, it would be advisable to simply leave the diaper off if possible; air circulation promotes healing. This is also a reason why children should simply be left without a diaper in the summer. Where there is no diaper, a skin fungus rarely develops.
For prevention, it is therefore very important to always keep the diaper dry and, if possible, simply leave it off from time to time. Hygiene is also important, but it should not be exaggerated; constant washing, especially with soap, destroys the natural flora in the intimate area and you are immediately more susceptible to a fungal infection again.
