Actually, spitting up in babies is often a normal process, as it can happen during a "burp" that some food comes back up. Nevertheless, it can also happen that some babies have to spit up more or more frequently than other children after meals, so this behavior must be observed.
With every milk meal, air also enters the stomach. This air intake is normal and is released again with burping. Since the digestive system in small babies is not yet fully developed, some of the food flows back out of the stomach with the "burp". If this happens occasionally, it is completely harmless. However, if there is a constant backflow of food because the closing mechanism between the esophagus and the stomach entrance fails, experts speak of reflux.
How does reflux manifest itself?
If it occurs persistently, reflux can damage the mucous membranes of the esophagus. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor if you observe it for a longer period of time. However, reflux is only really worrying if the baby only gains 100g to 200g per week. Doctors often recommend the use of AR formula, which is known as anti-reflux formula. This food is intended to prevent backflow. The special background of this food: a special swelling agent – known as casein – makes the bottle feed thicker, the food can flocculate more strongly in the stomach and backflow is made more difficult.
Discuss the further procedure with your doctor!
However, do not use this food on your own, as Stiftung Ökotest warns of a high risk of misuse, especially since AR formula is on supermarket shelves next to conventional bottle food. Be sure to discuss the administration of this special milk with a doctor.
Of course, reflux can also be treated through the use of various medications, surgery, or therapies – what makes sense in your case and how you can help your child is best clarified with a medical professional.
