Salad is healthy and a good side dish for main courses. Unfortunately, however, salad does not last long if stored incorrectly and may taste a bit boring after a few times. Children in particular often complain about the green vegetables. That's why we have collected a few tips here to make this side dish a highlight:
Tips for leaf lettuce
Salad stays fresh longer
To keep the lettuce fresh, cut the stalk crosswise and place it in a shallow bowl with a little water.
Storing salad
If you want to store leaf lettuce, it is best to wrap it in kitchen paper and keep it in a plastic container or bag in the vegetable compartment. Line the vegetable compartment with kitchen paper so that any escaping moisture can still be absorbed quickly.
Refreshing salad
To revive wilted lettuce leaves, you only need a little water and lemon: place the lettuce in a bowl of cold water with a dash of lemon juice. Leave it in the lemon water for about 10 minutes; the citric acid tightens the leaves. If you don't have a lemon at home, you can also achieve this with 1 tbsp of sugar or a few slices of raw potato.
Tips for preparing salad
The most important thing for a crisp, beautiful green salad is that the salad must be dry. So either dry it in a Salad spinner, or wrap it in a dry, clean tea towel. Never leave it standing in water, as the salad will lose its crisp appearance and also its vitamins. Even after drying, place a saucer in a bowl so that any remaining water can drain off well, but the salad remains on top and dry.
Serving salad correctly
Salad is best served separately from the marinade. This way, everyone can add as much dressing as they like, and you can also save any unused salad for the next day. Salad that is already soaked in dressing does not keep as well or for as long. Likewise, you should only salt it shortly before serving, otherwise it will wilt faster and lose its tenderness.
Caring for a wooden salad bowl
To keep the Wooden salad bowl does not lose its color, rub it occasionally with a walnut kernel. This will also make any scratches disappear.
Tips for refining the taste of salad
You can wonderfully spice up your salad with the following 5 tips:
- Rub the bowl with a cut garlic clove to get a pleasant hint of garlic flavor
- A highlight for salad is Roquefort (or another blue cheese). It is best to keep a package in the freezer. This way you always have some ready, and it is much easier to shave when frozen
- Salads can also be wonderfully refined with sprouts: My favorite: Alfalfa sprouts
- A healthy and also very delicious variation is seeds: sunflower, pine, pumpkin seeds, sesame, etc. There are already great seed mixes in supermarkets
- Of course, herbs should not be missing here: depending on your taste, everything fits: parsley, cress, chives, etc.
