Climbing towers are a welcome change in children's everyday play.Which model you choose when you want to offer your offspring new ways to burn off energy depends on several factors. First and foremost, you should address the following questions:
- What type of climbing tower is age-appropriate and suitable for my child?
- How much money do I want to invest?
- How much space do I have available?
- Should the climbing tower be in the garden or in the apartment?
This article is intended to help you make a better decision when buying a climbing tower. To keep an overview, we have divided some available models into three categories:
- Climbing towers for babies and toddlers: Simpler modules; usually with slides.
- Climbing towers for older children: Somewhat more extensive wooden structures for the garden.
- Turn on me – climbing tower = sports equipment: For the energetic fidget, sports equipment with wall bars, rings, and rope ladders is suitable.

The starting age for climbing fun is, depending on the difficulty level of the equipment, about two to three years. The climbing towers for Toddlers are colorful plastic devices that can be used both indoors and outdoors; the space requirement is limited to one to two m2. Usually, the play towers are combined with a slide. Depending on the complexity (and price), other elements such as additional ladders or crawl tunnels are added. So that hopefully nothing worse than bumps happens, the low fall height of about 70 cm is particularly important.
Safety: Colorful, round – safe?
Especially for adults who have remained young at heart, they do exist after all ;-), the Smoby 310426 – Adventure climbing tower with slide*, is recommended; it is TÜV-tested and, according to the manufacturer, can withstand 150 kg. Otherwise, manufacturers in this area unfortunately do not shine with certified safety.
Assembly of the climbing towers
At least the assembly is usually quite simple – the elements are simply plugged together without additional tools. There is also nothing to complain about regarding weather resistance, only processing defects, such as the sharp edges of the Katta climbing tower with slide*, are noticeable in a negative way. It is advisable to file these down yourself if necessary.
Investment
With a little over one hundred euros you are usually there with the basic equipment; the only outlier in this category is the BAYSIT slide and climbing tower maze*, for € 590. A true plastic monster, for which most people probably lack the space in the living room.
Climbing towers for older children

With increasing age, the imagination and mix the motor skills Skills of children grow, and these want to be satisfied. Thus, among the climbing frames for children from four to five years old, there are extremely imaginative, sophisticated, and lovingly detailed chalets, captain's cabins, clubhouses etc., which partly remind one of tree houses. The Pirate's Nest climbing tower looks like a miniature observation tower and offers the necessary overview that one naturally needs as a pirate. These have to be assembled by yourself, which can be a problem for less gifted handymen. Once managed, however, you can enjoy a solid and, above all, manifoldly expandable gem in the garden. And maybe Dad is allowed to play Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn for it too. It should hold him.
Delivery and assembly of villa, castle, or pirate's nest
The Delivery is carried out including wood (best to have it delivered to your home!), which is not always pre-drilled to allow for variations in assembly. A level surface is definitely a prerequisite, and the legs should also be anchored in the ground. Those who are particularly skilled in craftsmanship can stick to the Jungle Gym play tower construction kit Tower*, which consists only of the connecting and additional equipment parts. The wood (e.g., from the hardware store) and a slide must be obtained by yourself. Advantage of the complete packages: The wood is pressure-treated and does not need to be painted.
Investment
In terms of price, the play towers range between € 300 and € 800; the do-it-yourself package is available for a reasonable € 79.

If it is more about physical exercise than the fun factor of romping around, you will also find the right offers here.
Climbing Jungle
The products from Climbing Jungle* are intended for indoor use, as the frames are tensioned between the ceiling and the floor. The assembly is very simple. Production according to EN 1176 means that the climbing frames are also suitable for use in public areas, i.e., kindergartens and schools. The Climbing Jungle – Turnset* presents itself in a sober gym look, but offers diverse possibilities with ladder, rings, pull-up bar etc. to get a beet-red head. The space requirement is extremely low, but several people on the device at the same time hinder each other. Those who are satisfied with less accessories can also purchase the Climbing Jungle – Wall bars* alone.
Rope ladder – Frugal is not fun-less
That children always have to have the biggest, best, and most colorful version is often only believed by adults. A rope ladder will do just as well – and you can romp around and have fun with it just as well. The available rope ladders differ only marginally in the number of rungs: either four or five rungs. The three-sided shape of the climbing frame from Small Foot Design*, offers children the opportunity to sit inside and rest.
- The rope ladders are suitable for both indoors and outdoors.
- The wood is, however, not always weatherproof.
From the manufacturer Beri, there is an interesting variation; namely the Beri climbing net*. Available in large: from € 66.55 and small: from € 27.42. For the fact that you have to build the wooden frame yourself (not included in the scope of delivery), the prices seem quite steep.
Investment
The price range is between € 9 and € 70.
Conclusion – How do I find the right climbing tower?
Basically, the decision for a specific climbing device should not be difficult. Depending on the Age (toddler or older), purpose (imaginative play or gymnastics) and price expectations, you will usually find the right product quickly. The models in a category are generally quite similar and usually differ only by additional elements and thus a higher price. Manufacturer information on safety tests is, of course, a bonus for credibility.
