Too hot to sleep – when the bedroom turns into an oven.Soaked bed linen and a perceived 80 degrees in the bedroom, the gaze wanders annoyed to the alarm clock – again. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who cannot close an eye at night in tropical, sweaty temperatures. Falling and staying asleep becomes torture. That's why I used the time to collect the best tips on how to sleep better in the heat.

Tips & tricks against summer heat in the bedroom

Keep the heat out

To keep the heat where it belongs, namely outside, use the cool morning air and ventilate the bedroom thoroughly. To prevent the room from heating up unnecessarily, lower external or internal blinds, shutters, curtains, bamboo blinds – in short, everything that keeps the hot temperatures outside.

Draft in the evening and in the morning

To prevent warm air from accumulating in the room in the evening, open the windows as soon as the sun has set. It can also be nice and cool in the morning, so you can quickly let the warm air flow out by creating a draft.

Indoor climate

To fall asleep better in the heat, it helps to improve the climate in the bedroom: If you hang a wet cloth in the room or in front of the windows, water evaporates overnight and the room temperature drops slightly.

Goodbye down duvet

Banish the down duvet that provides cozy warmth in winter. Cotton bed linen, a sheet, or the thin cover of the duvet (without the filling) ensures a pleasant body temperature.

Fan or air conditioning

Fans or air conditioning units are practical helpers in sweltering heat. If you spend time in different rooms, you should purchase mobile devices for more flexibility. Also, pay attention to quality devices and don't just buy the cheapest ones.

But be careful with air conditioning units: Do not set them too icy, even if it is tempting. The indoor temperature should only deviate by 6 degrees from the outside temperature, otherwise there is a risk of catching a cold.

Wet cooling

To mitigate the nightly heat a little, it helps to place a wet towel on your forehead or feet.

Cooling companion

For some cooling on hot summer nights, a hot water bottle filled with cold water provides relief.

Clothing

In sweaty summer nights, it is coolest to sleep naked. If you don't want to do without nightwear or a camisole, it is best to put your sleepwear in the freezer for an hour before going to bed.

Dinner

To relieve the body, the last meal should be consumed two hours before the planned bedtime. A low-calorie, easily digestible dinner ensures good sleep. Fatty and spicy (sweat-inducing) foods should be avoided.

Heat-related relocation

If the heat is still unbearable despite all the tips & tricks, you can find some relief on extremely hot nights by moving: grab a camping bed, air mattress, or guest bed and spend the night in the basement, on the balcony, or even under the starry sky in the garden.
