According to statistics, at least one in three households in Austria has at least one pet. The most popular pets are dogs, considered man's best friend. But cats, birds, rats, and others are also well represented in the pet registers of Austrians and Germans. Regardless of which pet you have at home, please keep in mind that long journeys, whether by car, train, or plane, mean stress for an animal. For this reason, responsible pet owners think about their family vacation with or without their pet well in advance. After all, a vacation requires planning and organizational talent from pet owners. Where does the cat go? Is the dog coming along? Who feeds the parrot and who takes care of the fish in the aquarium? For example, anyone planning their vacation in southern Europe and wanting to travel by ship will definitely enjoy taking their dog on a ferry to Sardinia. The pet can run around on deck and enjoy the fresh sea air. Here is an overview of a few tips for a vacation with a pet:

Dogs really want to come along on vacation

Dogs are the type of pets that are very reluctant to be separated from their pack, i.e., their family. Therefore, when taking your dog on vacation, you should ensure that:

  • there are sufficient opportunities for walks and that there is not too much hustle and bustle at the holiday destination
  • the car journey does not take too long
  • the accommodation, hotel, or guesthouse is dog-friendly
  • the temperature difference is bearable for your four-legged friend
  • you take regular breaks, especially during car journeys, and have enough water on board to drink

It is also absolutely important to have a travel first-aid kit tailored to the animal by a veterinarian. A telephone number for a local veterinarian also cannot hurt. In addition, you should consider pet insurance just in case. This covers, for example, any veterinary costs that may arise.

Cats, fish, birds, and others prefer to stay at home

For most cats, traveling causes stress. They prefer to stay in their familiar environment. Therefore, care including cuddles from neighbors or acquaintances is ideal here. To ensure everything goes smoothly, you should create a checklist for the caregiver. They will then know immediately how to feed the cat, which medications the cat needs to be given and how, and above all, which veterinarian to contact in an emergency. Small animals are also ideally cared for by neighbors, acquaintances, or relatives; in any case, taking various small animals on vacation would be far too stressful for both the animal and the family.

Berghotel Arthurhaus

a charming 3* hotel in Mühlbach at the foot of the Hochkönig, is one of the true insider tips among dog lovers and is often the first choice for a vacation with a dog in Austria. Bergl, the dachshund boss of the house, manages the hotel with his 2 human companions, which features rooms, family apartments, and a rustic, cozy atmosphere. Whether you enjoy the view on the sun terrace or warm yourself by the blazing fire of the tiled stove in winter, the Arthurhaus is your relaxation oasis for dog and companion alike. Dogs enjoy special status in this hotel anyway, because the boss Heidi, herself a proud dachshund owner of Bergl, attaches great importance to the fact that four-legged guests also feel comfortable at the Berghotel Arthurhaus. Food and water bowls as well as sleeping places and baskets can be left at home, because they are available to borrow on-site. A special dog menu, dog stations in the house, and waste bag dispensers in front of the door make the stay even more pleasant. And if you think that the ball of fur on four paws has to pay like any human guest, you are mistaken, because four-legged guests stay for free at the Arthurhaus.
