A difficult decision lies ahead of you: What will you buy as the first baby equipment for your baby? We would like to help you! – This is not intended to be a binding "guide" that you must follow. We simply want to help you with a few tips to get an overview of the abundance of baby equipment and provide you with helpful suggestions. Most people start buying the initial equipment before the birth. But what is sensible, useful, or really needed in the end? In the following, we want to give you an overview of the essential things!

Baby monitor

A useful purchase for your baby equipment is the baby monitor. Regardless of whether your baby is still sleeping in your bedroom or in their own nursery – this way you can safely close the doors and do not have to constantly listen for your baby's sounds. Before you use the baby monitor, you should do a noise test so that the device is optimally adjusted.

Comfortable chair and nursing pillow

For your baby equipment, you should by no means forget a comfortable retreat for breastfeeding. You will spend a lot of time doing it. Set up a cozy place in the nursery. Your seating should have an armrest for support. A nice armchair could also serve you well. A great addition to the baby equipment are nursing pillows, which are available as a smaller firm version or in a longer and softer version. The small nursing pillows are easier to handle and the large ones are well suited as a nest for your baby bed.

Children's wardrobe and children's chest of drawers

An important part of your new baby equipment should be the children's wardrobe. In addition to the original design of the children's wardrobe, it should above all be stable and resilient. The interior of this baby equipment should offer plenty of space for your baby's things. You should not underestimate that your baby will need small but huge amounts of spare clothes. Your children's wardrobe should therefore offer plenty of storage space. The same applies, of course, to a children's chest of drawers. You should purchase this in addition to your baby equipment if the space in the children's wardrobe and the changing table is not enough for you. Initially, the purchase of this baby equipment might seem superfluous to you. But keep in mind that your baby will grow up quickly and will collect many toys in addition to their clothes. Your baby equipment will grow with your baby and expand visibly.

Crib and equipment

The greatest effort in purchasing your new baby equipment will be the crib and its equipment. This baby equipment includes not only your new crib itself, but also a baby mattress, bed insert, baby quilt, bed linen, and a baby sleeping bag. As with all furniture in your baby equipment, the crib should be stable and resilient. We have created another extensive guide for you for the further equipment of your crib. (Reference)

Stroller

The stroller is also part of the basic baby equipment. Your new stroller must meet many requirements. When buying this baby equipment, you should make sure that it is stable and robustly built. The inner bag of the baby equipment should, for example, be softly padded so that your baby is comfortable. Most strollers offer you many different additional options and enough storage space for all the utensils you need for an excursion. It is important with this baby equipment that it can be folded up, for example, to enable transport in a car.

Play mats

Since your baby will not always sleep and you cannot carry them with you all the time, a play mat is part of the baby equipment. Play mats are usually somewhat thicker quilted blankets. It should definitely be suitable for machine washing. You can safely lay your baby down on a play mat and they can kick around happily and cheerfully. The really practical thing about this baby equipment is that you can lay the blanket wherever you are yourself. This way you always have your baby near you, even if you have to deal with other things. Therefore, actually a "must" for your new baby equipment!

Playpen and playpen inserts

A playpen is a sensible purchase for the baby equipment, especially for the first years of your baby. The playpen can be the ideal playground for your baby. A good playpen is stable and has wheels so that it is easy to push to different places. You should make sure that it is height-adjustable. Initially, your baby will kick in this baby equipment, later crawl around, and finally, they will pull themselves up on the bars quite easily and by themselves to stand and then practice their first steps. – And you don't have to worry, because your baby is safe in the playpen - if you always adjust the height. Also remember that a playpen insert is part of the baby equipment. This should be washable.

Changing table and changing mat

The changing table is the most important piece of furniture in your baby equipment. You will need your changing table at least 5 times a day to change your baby. Please make sure that the changing table is practical and corresponds to your height. This relieves your back, which is already strained by your baby anyway. It is useful if this baby equipment has high side edges, which are intended to prevent your baby from falling down. A changing table should definitely have various drawers and a small shelf to be able to stow away the changing accessories – which also belong to basic baby equipment – and the diapers. Do not forget that a changing mat is part of the baby equipment. The cover of your changing mat should definitely be washable. The mat itself should at least be washable.

  1. Hello!
Thank you very, very much, the article really helped me a lot:)
I will be a mother for the first time in July and I am already quite crazy because I don't know which things you definitely need and what you could possibly do without (with a tighter budget). There is simply so much choice and I find it hard to decide anyway ?
