To ensure that it is not only the garden that is always colorful and green, we also like to bring one or two houseplants into our rooms at home. They are cherished and cared for just like all the other plants in the garden, so it breaks a gardener's heart when they notice that something is wrong with the potted plants.
However, you don't have to give up immediately; you can save your beloved plants with simple remedies.
What to do about pests in potted plants
Aphids
Have you discovered aphids on your potted plants? This is not only unpleasant, but they can also multiply over time. Therefore, the following tip is recommended: simply pour three liters of boiling water over 100g of nettle herb and let it steep for 15 minutes. Then strain the herb thoroughly and let the "tea" cool down. You can then put this solution into a spray bottle and spray the affected plants thoroughly. If necessary, this treatment can be repeated several times.
Worms and aphids
Have worms, aphids, or other pests been spotted in the soil of the potted plant? This must, of course, be changed immediately: simply stick 6-8 matches into the soil with the head facing downwards. The sulfur destroys the animals without harming the plant itself. Once the sulfur on the matches has dissolved, you can replace them with new ones.
Scale insects
Unfortunately, scale insects are also not uncommon on potted plants: a homemade broth can be an excellent help here. Simply mix ½ teaspoon of dish soap with one tablespoon of methylated spirits in a liter of lukewarm waterand spray the plants with it.
Another tip: a mixture of soap, tobacco residues, and coffee grounds also makes scale insects flee. Simply spray the decoction onto the plants after it has cooled down. But what can you do if the undersides of palm leaves are infested with scale insects? Simply wipe the leaves thoroughly with soapy water.
Spider mites
Spider mites do not only claim their territory in gardens; they can also infest potted plants in houses and apartments during the heating season in winter. Timing is important here. If you recognize the pests quickly, you can take resolute action. First, the plants must be supplied with plenty of water, then place the entire potted plant in a clear plastic bag and tie it shut tightly. Now, high humidity builds up in the bag, which the spider mites cannot tolerate. After a few days, you can remove the protective cover. However, observe the affected plants, as not all species can tolerate this treatment.
Tip for potted azaleas: a temperature shock can be useful. To do this, immerse the crown of the small tree three times for two seconds each, with an interval of four to five seconds, in approximately 55°C hot water. Rest assured that the spider mites will die here – but the plant remains undamaged.
Most pests – especially spider mites – love dry air and loathe high humidity. Therefore, a regular spray shower is extremely pleasant for plants and hated by pests. So feel free to put a spray bottle on the windowsill and treat your plants to a shower regularly.
Whiteflies
Whiteflies can also often be observed in potted plants. These insects like to multiply at warm room temperatures. Therefore, a cold period can quickly become the downfall of these pests. Simply place the plants in a cold hallway or alternatively in the stairwell for a few weeks.
Extra tip: To keep vermin away easily and inexpensively, mix crumbled cork into the potting soil.
