Depending on the water hardness, it can gradually happen that the shower head becomes calcified. You notice this when only a thin stream of water trickles out of the shower. The limescale clogs the nozzles, preventing the water from passing through. Therefore, the shower head must be descaled from time to time. Here we have a few household remedies to be able to use the shower head perfectly again without limescale:
Cleaning calcified shower heads
Calcified shower heads can also be easily descaled with household remedies such as vinegar or baking soda. Here are the instructions:
Vinegar against calcified shower head
What you’ll need:
- 1 part vinegar
- 1 part water
- large bowl
Instructions:
Mix the vinegar with the water in the bowl, place the shower head in this solution and let it soak, preferably overnight. To increase the effect, you can boil the solution including the shower head for about 15 minutes. However, this variant is unsuitable for coated materials. Then wipe the shower head with a cloth and the water can flow properly again.
Baking soda against calcified shower head
What you’ll need:
- Breakfast bag
- 40 g baking soda
- 250 ml vinegar
Instructions:
Put the baking soda, vinegar, and the shower head into a breakfast bag. Tie the bag very loosely with a string so that the gases that form can escape, and let it work for about 1 hour. Then turn on the shower briefly and let the water flow again. Finally, a full stream of water again!

Vinegar against limescale
The Limescale stains can also be easily wiped off with a cloth soaked in vinegar soaked cloth. Kitchen paper is very suitable for this. For stubborn stains, simply wrap this vinegar-soaked cloth around the fitting and let it soak for at least 2 hours or overnight; afterwards, the limescale is gone.
Extra tip: with a tiny portion of shampoo everything shines like new again too!
Pour some vinegar into the kettle regularly and let it soak – after some time, the calcifications will dissolve and you can clean the kettle more easily.
Lemons against limescale
Rub the area with a lemon and then polish it slightly with a clean cloth afterwards. This also creates a protective film and the water beads off better!
Kettles and water boilers regularly boil with a water-lemon mixture and the limescale deposits will be a thing of the past.
