Falscher Hase - Meatloaf
Total time40 min.
Cooking time40 min.

The Falscher Hase is a traditional dish that ideally consists of minced meat. In some variations, a hard-boiled egg is added to the meatloaf; in this recipe, we have omitted this and used feta strips instead. Of course, the Falscher Hase also tastes very delicious without filling and is a change from meatballs/minced meat patties.

Boiled potatoes as well as peas and root vegetables are excellent with this dish.

Small tip: Leftovers can be stored perfectly in the refrigerator for one or two days. Either reheat the dish or enjoy the Falscher Hase cold, spread with mustard as cold cuts.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. For the meatloaf, the minced meat is placed in a sufficiently large bowl and mixed with the spices. Then, in the simple version, the meatloaf is shaped into an elongated loaf. If you want to additionally fill the Falscher Hase, include the filling and make sure that the filling ingredients are completely enclosed by the meatloaf.

  2. Now heat some butter in a large, wide saucepan and sear the meatloaf on all sides. It is recommended to use two spatulas to turn the meat loaf.

  3. After browning, about one liter of lukewarm water is added so that the roast can now simmer. An optimal cooking time is approximately 35-40 minutes.

  4. Besides cooking in a pot, you can also prepare the Falscher Hase in the oven. For this, the loaf is either placed on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or put into a roasting pan to which about 200ml of water is added. The cooking time with top and bottom heat at 200° C on the middle rack is about 30 to 40 minutes, until a slight browning of the surface is visible.
