Shashlik pot

Who doesn't enjoy a good, delicious shashlik? At the fair, at a town festival, or even at home: the Hungarian delicacy is offered in numerous variations. Traditionally, meat is skewered alternately with bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, and bacon or small sausages. A true delicacy.

Recipe for a shashlik pot

Tip:If you like it spicier, you can also add some chili powder or even finely chopped chili peppers to the sauce. For the tough ones, or those who want to add a little kick to the shashlik pot, a dash of Tabasco is advisable. Season to taste with other spices, and if necessary, thin the sauce a little with water. Rice, pasta, or simply a baguette go best with this dish.

Note:The shashlik pot is incredibly good for experimenting and varying. For example, you can use minced meat instead of mixed goulash. If you prefer vegetables over meat, you can use less meat and add an extra bell pepper or perhaps a zucchini. You can also experiment with the seasoning: caraway seeds and a few bay leaves are said to leave an oriental touch. The use of cream or sour cream is also not uncommon in some recipes. There are hardly any limits to the possibilities with recipes like the shashlik pot.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. For the shashlik pot, sear the mixed goulash and the pork belly in a sufficiently large pot with a little oil.

  2. Rinse the meat under running water, then pat dry and cut into bite-sized pieces.

  3. Peel and quarter the onions; wash the peppers and tomatoes, remove the insides and cut into cubes.

  4. The goulash is put into the pot together with the onions and seasoned with salt and pepper.

  5. Once the meat is well browned, the vegetables are then added.

  6. After about 5 minutes, the contents of the pot are topped up with half a liter of water.

  7. This mixture is left to simmer for about half an hour to three quarters of an hour.

  8. In the meantime you can prepare the sauce, because a shashlik pot without sauce is as boring as serving a shashlik skewer dry.

  9. For the super-tasty sauce, combine the Zigeunersauce with the shashlik sauce, curry powder, sugar, paprika powder and garlic salt in a bowl.

  10. This sauce is added to the shashlik pot at the end of the cooking time, stirred in and heated through.

  11. Ideally, you can now place the pot in the oven at approx. 80° Celsius (top and bottom heat) so that the shashlik pot stays nice and warm, while the meat and vegetables have the opportunity to combine sufficiently with the sauce.

Tips & Notes

If you like it hotter, you can add some chili powder or even finely chopped chili peppers to the sauce. For the hard?boiled, or those who want to give the shashlik pot a bit of extra kick, a dash of Tabasco is recommended. Depending on taste, season with additional spices and, if necessary, dilute the sauce a little with water. This dish goes best with rice, pasta or simply baguette.
