Pigs in a blanket

This dish not only sounds funny, it is also super delicious. Depending on the region, a different dough is used to hide the sausages. Whether yeast dough, bread dough, or puff pastry – the sausage is wrapped in the dough, baked, and eaten warm.

The sausages taste best with a pasta or potato salad, but as shown here in the picture, the pastry is also wonderful to enjoy with a colorful salad. If you like, you can also serve some ketchup or mustard.

Hot tips: you can also add a little grated cheese to the dough before baking. The cheese crust is simply brilliant. Herbs or sesame seeds as well as other grains also provide variety and taste simply excellent.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Let the dough thaw if you do not make it yourself but buy it packaged from the supermarket.

  2. Now you can use the whole sheets or simply halve them.

  3. Now, depending on taste, you can spread a nice layer of processed cheese, horseradish, or mustard on the pastry before placing the sausage.

  4. Then roll the sausage well in the dough, score it two to three times with a sharp knife, and optionally brush with some egg yolk.

  5. The sausage in pastry is now placed on the baking tray lined with parchment paper.

  6. It's best to place the dough seam side down, otherwise there is a high risk that the dough will roll up by itself as it rises.

  7. The tray now goes on the middle rack in the preheated oven.

  8. At 200° the sausages need between 15–20 minutes, depending on the desired level of browning.
